View Full Version : CPU temperature increasing

I've noticed that my CPU temp seems to be increasing. I've got an AMD 800, the CPU fan had a thermal pad which I used. It used to hover about 30 C but then I noticed recently it was getting close to 40 c after I upgraded to windows XP, although I hadn't checked it for a while.
Today I saw it at 44 C
Should I be worried? My Bios is set to shut down at 50C. I've got some artic paste, should I take off the fan and use the artic? Or could there be a problem with my fan? Is it XP? any help appreciated.

It will go higher than 50c but it is good you have it set at 50. At 44c your running around 111f. Personally I would get rid of the "pad" and use ARTIC Silver a pad just doesn't fill the voids good enough. IMO, What type of fan & heat sink you useing?

I'm using a Quiet PC CPU fan - AMD Radial Fin (standard - not the large one)
see http://www.quietpc.com/cpucooling.php
thanks for the advice
A Number of things can cause your cpu temps to rise.
Room temperature changes for one.
Dust bunnies blocking the air inlets or exhaust outlets
The Fins on the heatsink being plugged by dust.
Upgrading to XP should not have an adverse affect on the cpu temp.
XP does run more processes but it should not cause an increase in cpu usage to the point that your temps jump up by 10 to 15 degrees
When you check and clean out the dust from the heatsink.
If you use compressed air .
Use something to lock the fan while pushing air through the heat sink.
This will help avoid fan over speed and possible damage to the fan

If this is the Duron 800 you're talking about, I have the same CPU - and I ran into somewhat similar problems last week; see my posts over in the System Troubleshooting forum. To make a long story short, inadequate cooling coupled with an inadequate power supply _and_ lots and lots and lots of dust bunnies were combining to send interior temperatures zooming and causing frequent lockups.
I'm not sure about "arctic paste", but I would definitely look into upgrading your CPU cooler fan. I have also heard recently about special "cooler" devices that fit around your CPU assembly and are supposed to have astounding effects on the temperature; one guy I talked to claims that his CPU, with the cooler operating, now runs at 45 degrees Fahrenheit!
Also, you might be well-advised to try something like the FC-2000 exhaust/turbine fan that I put into my case last week; it fits into one of the expansion slots (you lose a PCI slot, to be sure, but the payoff is well worth it IMO) and blows cold air inside the case and propels hot air out of the case. The results have been dramatic; I think system board temperatures have gone down by 25% (Fahrenheit degrees) since I put it in! As to my own CPU, it's been holding steady at 39 - 40 degrees C (about 102 - 105 degrees F), which is on the hot side but quite sustainable considering that it's rated for operation at up to 90 degrees C. Come to think of it, maybe _I_ will look into improving my own CPU cooling asembly.
