Looking for advice on which CD burning software to try/buy. I'm running Win2K and I have a Creative CDRW 8432 and it came with Nero. I had problems with the software--constant errors when trying to make an audio CD, before and after upgrading to Win2K. So I installed the Nero upgrade from their website, and am having even more problems. So I downloaded a free trial version program from zdnet--I think its accurateburn--and I was able to burn an audio CD the very first time with no errors. Unfortunately, it only burns at 2X since its not registered. Registering that program will cost $20, so before I do that, was hoping you all could chime in on what software you use/recommend. Thanks! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've found Roxio accurate and easy to work with, but it's mucho bucks.

musicmatch (http://www.musicmatch.com/)

to upgrade costs as well, but it works very well.

I have had a horror story for the most part with ROXIO, older adaptec worked ok, but the new one works only sometimes.

My answer for that was to get the very thing you say won't work for you- NERO 5.5.

it seems to work at least.

Running winXP Pro here and have not installed musicmatch (yet)

About half-way down this page (http://radified.com/TheBest/programs_02.htm) you'll find notes on some of the better burning software. Lots of good info to be had on the rest of the site, as well.

How would Nero not have worked for you on the Creative 8x4x32 CD-RW? If this is the same drive I'm thinking about, I also have it - only it's billed as a Sony CRX-140E (which I understand was marketed by Creative under its own label), and I've been using Nero 5.5.5.1 with the drive from the get-go with no problems whatsoever. Then again, I've never tried making an audio CD - I notice you didn't say if you had any problem with _data_ CD's.

The problem I had with Nero was getting it to actually burn audio CDs and sometimes had problems burning data (mp3) CDs. During audio burn, I'd get a message such as "loss of audio stream" or something like that. Lately, after I installed an upgrade found at Nero's web site, I got "buffer underrun" errors. The burner I have was advertised as having a 2mB buffer, so not sure why that would happen with Win2K and 320 RAM. Before the upgrade, tho, it did work a few times, but only right after I booted up and ran EndItAll (back when I was running Win95/98). To make a long story short, I was at CostCo yesterday and bought Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum edition, and after installing the 5.1 upgrade found at Roxio's web site and installing a driver update posted by Rick in a reply to my query in the Software Troubleshooting Forum, I think I have what I need for burning audio and MP3 CDs. As for ripping MP3s, I am using CDex mostly cuz I can rip a range of tracks when I want to (i.e. for Operation: Mindcrime, which opens up another whole can of worms getting that working right). Easy CD Creator Platinum has an MP3 ripper, but I haven't used it yet so not sure if it does ranges or not. If anyone knows of a good ripper that does ranges, please let me know. Thanks to all for your help!

So far I'm diggin' Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum from Roxio. Some of the shortfalls I'm experiencing are probably due to my cd recorder--Creative 8X4X32 with only a 2Mb buffer. To make an MP3 CD, I had to run it from first boot and after I ran EndItAll. That's even after I selected "copy to hard drive first" option on the first attempt. But after I rebooted and ran EndItAll, I was able to burn an MP3 CD at 8X. Then I tried to burn an audio CD at 8X with eight tracks, and got errors on that, among them the infamous "buffer underrun" error. So I rebooted and ran EndItAll and tried again--same results. So I rebooted and ran EndItAll AGAIN and still got the same errors. I should say here that I was trying to create an audio CD from MP3 files. So this morning before I went to work I tried one more time, but didn't run EndItAll, and tried it at the next slower burn speed of 4X (6X wasn't an option for some reason), and it worked. Go figure.

As for ripping MP3s from CD--one track or a range of tracks, that worked GREAT and I didn't have the audio errors with Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime that I had when ripping with CDex.

So my thinking is I need to upgrade my CD burner and have been reading a few reviews on Teac's CD W540E, a 40X12X48 burner. The pros (i.e. 8Mb buffer and burnproof technology) far outweigh the cons (i.e. a bit loud--so I'll crank up the stereo), plus I've seen it on line for as little as $77 not including shipping.

Well, this is beginning to sound like a review and/or commercial, so I'll end it here. If anyone has any experience--positive or negative--with the Teac CD W540E, I'd love to get the feedback.

Have a great weekend and GO LAKERS!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I am ignoring the suggestion of getting a cracked number which as PrntRhd said should not be suggested in the forums.

BUT! Please note that this post is almost 4 (four) years old The suggestion of Nero 5.5 was a gentle hint as to the age. Nero is now upto version 6.6xxx and Ver 7.xxxx
