View Full Version : USB 2.0 Drives: saving zip archive to them fails.

It's a 1 GB memory stick and an 80 GB external IDE HDD enclosure connected to a PCI to USB 2.0 controller card.

With this single exception, everything in regard to them appears to be working as it aught.

I can save files to a zip archive just fine on the internal HDD, but not to the USB devices.
At least I cannot see them, or find them in a "search" even though I know exactly where I specified the archive should be saved, and [as normal] was watching the folder [as the archive was being created] expecting to see the zip file appear.

... and which archiving utility is it and are you trying to modify an existing archive or create one de novo.

1. This is in Win2000Pro.

2. The utility is "UltimateZip" [GREAT zip utility], and I was making a new archive, not modifying one already in existence.

3. Just tried it again, and again it failed, and I cannot find "Test.zip" on any of my presently accessible drives. [C: D: E: F: G: H:]
I saved it to "H:\00\Test.zip".

4. It saves to "C:\00\Test.zip" just fine.

UltimateZip has been good but the latest version can only be downloaded as "cripple-ware".

I would try another archiver and see if you can then differentiate if the problem is with Windows or the Utility itself.

I personally like 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) but Izarc (http://www.izarc.org/download.html) and ZipGenius (http://www.zipgenius.it/) are other considerations.

Installed "7-Zip" and used it to make a zip archive to "H:\00\Test.zip", which it did just fine.
".zip" files are still associated with "UltimatZip" so I was able to right-click on the file [on the Flash Drive] and "Extract to Here", and "UltimatZip" ran and extracted all the files into that folder.

I like the fact that 7-zip uses its own "7-Zip File Manager", so it's possible for me to choose to use either "UltimatZip" or 7-Zip to do a job.

As time passes I'll see which I like best.

Haven't tried 7-Zip. But I have been using ZipGenius for about year or so and like it quite a bit. Many options and many formats.
