I bought one WD one year ago. A WD30Gb-ATA100-7200 rpm. Goes still perfectly fine. It came with a floppy with some utilities but i never used. I was fully satisfied.

I have WD drives that are 10 years old and still work great. No matter what brand you go with, you'll run across a bad batch now and then, but in general the more well known brands are all pretty good. Seagate, Western Digital, IBM, Maxtor, Quantum. I've used all but IBM and never had any complaints with any of them. Some of my Seagate drives are MFM drives that came out of XT machines, and still work. Also have WD drives in the 200-300MB range that are still in good working condition, with no bad clusters.

I replaced my hard drive only a few months ago. I was looking at WD but decided against them when I attempted to contact their web site. It was one of the slowest web sites I have ever had the displeasure of visiting. The Maxtor web site worked great so I bought from them. I now have two 7200 RPM Maxtor drives (60 and 80 GB). Just my $0.02.

Rond36.....how do you find the special edition drives? Does the larger cache actually have any noticible differance on the speed of the pc?
Flick, if slow websites influence you buying decisions then MS anything should be on the bottom of the list....I found MS sites much slower thatn WD's... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Philzee,
I agree with Pete, stick with one of the big 4 and you'll do ok (IBM, Seagate, WD or Maxtor). I have seen drives from each of the above crap out after a few weeks and I have seen them run 10+ years. I am happy with my current 40gig 7200rpm WD...

I really don't know if I can tell the difference they are very fast and they are the first UDMA 100 drives that I have had so I have nothing to compare them to. A regular drive model number is WDC1000BB the special edition model number is WDC1000JB(for the 100GB model) they only come in 80GB, 100GB, and 120GB. I don't know where you would find them in Scotland. I ordered mine from newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=14&manufactory=1306&DEPA=1)
