"No more Plextor consumer drives - parent company pulls plug" According to a Japanese website. http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/No-more-Plextor-consumer-drives---parent-company-pulls-plug.html
I'll withhold my editorial comments regarding Plextor but this is another step in the homogenization of the optical disc drive market.

No official word yet but here is an update http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/Plextor-drives-continue-to-be-available-but-how-many.html
I've suspected this for a while, because several models of Plextor drives have been 'outsourced'...they've been made by other companies.

When optical drives became commodity items, the price Plextor could charge crashed. It is hard to sell optical drives for $300 when others are selling them for $40.
So Plextor outsourcing others' drives and putting their label on them is no great stretch.
