How do you figure out how big a hd is?
I know MB= cyl*Hd*spt/2048
and there are 512 bps
ex:
1024 cyl
16hd
26spt
MB= cyl*Hd*spt/2048 = 208 mb hard drive
where did 2048 come from

Hi there dzagalik
If you open up My Computer on the desktop and right click on the Drive then choose properties it will give you the size of your drive. If you have partitioned the drive, right click and drag down to cover all partitions this will give you the total of all partitions

That was a question on a practise test for the A+ Certification. My question is if they have something like this on the actual test, where did they get the number 2048 the cyl multiplied by 2? If that same question were to be on the test I would know 208MB would be the answer. If it is a bigger/smaller HD then I need to know how they arrived at ???MB. Like I said I understand cyl*hd*spt/2048 and that there are 512 bps, what I don't know or understand is how and where did they get the 2048 number.

Thanks for helping me http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif

the actual formula used is cylinders*sectors*heads*512 ( the minimum bytes per sector )=Disk size, so if you have 1024( cylinders )*63 (sectors)*16 ( heads)*512 (bytes per sector ) you have a hard disk of 528,482,304 bytes or 504 MB's.

c*s*h*512=hd size

so if you have 1024 (c )* 16 (hd )* 26 (sectors)*512 ( cluster )= 218,103,808 or 208 MB's

you use the true decimal equivalant of MB ( or GB ) to divide your final answer for the percieved disk size.

1 MB= 1,048,576

1 GB= 1,073,741,824

Does this help you a little better?
