Hi there
I have just bought a Duron 800 mhz, 200 mhz FSB cpu, to tide me over until I can afford an Athlon XP 2 gig , anyway I dont have a problem as such but the motherboard, (gigabyte via 266a) FSB switch gives the option of 100/133 mhz, I know I need to set this at 100mhz and 8x clock ratio but why is the motherboard speed rated at the 100/133 and how does it relate to the 200/266 as stated on the cpu and the motherboard FSB support on the box.where and how does it get from 100 to 200 mhz. I think i should already know this but I can't recall where I saw the information.

Hi nev, the 200/266 you see are standards for DDR SDRAM memory-if your board supports DDR then when you have the FSB set to 100mhz it equals effective 200mhz because DDR transfers data on the rise and fall of the clock signal.

133=266, etc...

Hi iisbob

Thanks for that, I understand now how that works, If I wanted could I put a cpu into there that was 100mhz, or will only cpu's with 200 and 266 mhz buses work ?
Thanks again Nev

The CPU and memory will both have to support 200/266, if you use 100mhz memory with a standard CPU, you'll only get a FSB of 100 mhz.

Your Duron will only support up to 200 ( 100 DDR'd ), you'll need to get an Athlon to support 266 ( 133 *DDR ).

If your curent memory ( and system board ) will support 266 FSB, then all you'll have to do is get an Athlon @ 266 to run the 266 FSB.

Hi again
thanks again for the info , just two more things are bugging me now, the first is I have the thing up and running now everything works ok. BUT !!!!!! I expected to hear a single bleep from the case speaker on bootup but nothing, is this normal for this motherboard or is there a fault(how can I test the board or speaker)Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-7VTXH+ .and the other thing is I had a ribbon cable supplied with board for IDE connection, I just wondered how can you tell the difference between a normal cable and a UDMA 66 or 100 cable. they all look the same from what I can see of the one's I have
Thanks again
