Is there any way that I can link two computers together, so that on my screen I can work on the other persons computer and so on? Maybe a connecting device of some sort?

Yes, there are various applications that can be used...including remote help function built into XP. Yes, the can be used over the internet, as long as there is at least one stable (not necessarily static, but that helps) IP address...

FWIW look up "ad hoc" and "peer to peer networking" on the www.

cdcq12, I'm looking to do the same thing. Let me know what you end up choosing.

Some options I'm considering include http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/ and http://www.tightvnc.com/

mjc, about your xp remote desktop suggestion - i read the link you posted but it seems that it's only for communicating or logging in to another system. I'm wondering whether it can be used to view the desktop of another terminal, for remote monitoring purposes. do you know about this?

what remote desktop monitoring tools would anyone recommend? (free if possible)

Not quite sure, I don't use it...:o

I have, on occasion, used TightVNC...

The MS stuff also has a remote assistance component...I'm not sure how much control you have when using it, but someone here should have more info on it...

Remote desktop requires another user to accept the connection. If you want to login remotely from anywhere without user intervention on the other end, your are going to want to use a VLAN connection. Which will need to be installed and configured on both ends. But once configured no other intervention will be required on the host machine.

Sorry I can't help you with any recommendations on specific programs. I am using a VLAN connection right now, but it is the only one I have ever used. :)

Sorry I should have said VPN, not VLAN. :o
