I'm starting to build a new system for editing video.
I want to put a 2nd hard drive on the system, and am not sure if I should 1 - put it as a slave on the primary IDE channel?
2 - put it as master on the 2nd IDE channel with the CD-RW drive as the slave?
3 - put it on a PCI IDE card?
4 - put the CD-RW on the PCI card and put the 2nd hard drive on the 2nd IDE channel as only device?
5 - some other option Ihaven't thought about?
Does anyone have any thoughts on the best solution? I want to put the video editing application on the primary hard drive and use the 2nd hard drive to put the video files.
Thanks.

Put the 2 hard drives on the same channel.

Depending on your chipset, and if there are specific Ultra ATA drivers for it that allow independant drive speed mastering, i'd suggest putting the new HD as Slave on the Primary IDE ( providing both drives were of the same spec, ie. both ATA66~/7200 rpm ) or if not the same specs just make sure you have the updated UltraATA chipset driver so that they can work at their own seperate speeds on the same channel.

Or you can take an UltraATA PCI card to use the New HD on to make sure it runs it's own speed, or use the CDRW on it's own independant channel on that card to do the same.

Or simply buy yourself a new 100 GB + drive and replace your old one.

Then you don't have to worry about moving any drives around. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I run a Maxtor 7200 RPM 66 MB/s drive as a master and a seagate 5400 RPM 33MB/s (I think that is right...) HD as a slave drive all on my primary IDE channel. So far I have not had any problems with either my newest MOBO (Abit KG7-R I think) or my much older SOYO motherboard. I have also been able to record video via a TV tuner card without many problems.

The first time I installed Windows it took only one try. When I tried re-installing Windows at a later date it took 30+ tries before I got it right... go figure. =P
