View Full Version : Identifying a Video Card

Hi, i've just got a PCI Matrox video card (no box, no manuals, no drivers: just the card).
It has a sticker on it that reads "Myst/4BI".
When the machine starts, the card's BIOS shows Matrox MGA Mystique, and Windows ME detects it with the same name. But i got into the Matrox web site and got quite confused trying to find which card it is. It has a chip on it that reads "64-bits MGA", and DirectX Information tells me that it has 4MB of memory. Based on this items, i think that it's a Matrox Mystique 220. Am i right? I've already downloaded a PDF manual for Mystique 220 which also is for Millennium II. In there it describes some utilities that come bundled with the CD, that i'd like to get. Also, which drivers should I download? Will the downloadable drivers on the Matrox site work better with Windows ME that the ones that Windows itself installed?
Also i'm confused by another point: I have a Voodoo Graphics card (Skywell Magic 3d) that in order to work has to be attached with an out of the case cable that works as a bridge. So, if the other video card also has 3D Gaming capabilities (does the mystique 220 has?) is it possible that some games use that card for effects instead of the 3dfx card? Or all games let you choose which card to use? Before this Matrox card i've had a Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 Pro, and although i've read that Quake 3 Arena would run with a Voodoo Graphics, it told me that the Desktop colors depth was low, and it hung up while loading. Now, with the Matrox i'm able to choose a 32-bit color mode, and Quake 3 runs but mess up all the colors (it's impossible to even move through menus with that colors, but you can hear the menu's sounds. Would installing the matrox drivers fix this?
Thank you very much

Carl58 That doesn't answer the question. Let's assume this person wants to use the card he/she has until informed otherwise.

Matrox (http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/identify_product.cfm) has a pretty good page on identifying their cards by chip number. I think you can get to the driver download page from there also. I used the default Windows 98 driver with my Mystique 220, didn't notice any difference from the drivers on the CD that came with it or the newest ones available on the Matrox site.

With that particular card I had problems with win98 but it might work better with ME...it seemed to cause a lot of illegal operation errors, lockups and general protection faults. (compounded by the fact that McAffee was causing all of the same problems...what a nightmare...)

MYST means it's a Mystique, (not 220) and you can check the chipset on the card and get the number from it, then check the Chipset Info section. That might confirm it. MY220 would be the Mystique 220.

Can't tell you anything about the other card, I haven't used one of that type.

Hi, i would say that i HAVE to use that card since i can't afford something better http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif (besides i'm from Argentina, and now everything in dollars costs 3 times more than before)
Maybe i can get an AGP Geforce 2 in a couple of months.
Tonight i'll check the chipset at home and tomorrow morning i tell you. By the way, until now the card is working well on my pc with WinME, but only has there a couple of days. If i begin to have frequent lockups, then i'll try replacing the card first.
Thanks

If you look on the card for the FCC number and then go to the following site and do a search this will give you the info on your card. Just remember to read ALL the instruction on the site and follow them exactly or you will not have much luck
