Hi again
thanks again for the info , just two more things are bugging me now, the first is I have the thing up and running now everything works ok. BUT !!!!!! I expected to hear a single bleep from the case speaker on bootup but nothing, is this normal for this motherboard or is there a fault(how can I test the board or speaker)Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-7VTXH+ .and the other thing is I had a ribbon cable supplied with board for IDE connection, I just wondered how can you tell the difference between a normal cable and a UDMA 66 or 100 cable. they all look the same from what I can see of the one's I have
Thanks again
Nev

A short "beep" sounds when POST is complete (applicable to most systems) But not all, yours may be the latter of the two What does the Motherboard manual say.

If it makes it through POST with no beep and continues to load the OS don't worry about it that's not a problem unless it doesn't make it through POST. Sometimes mine beeps sometimes it doesen't. I don't worry if mine beeps or not as long as it boots

A UDMA 66/100 cable has twice as many ridges on it and the ridges are smaller. The standard cable has ridges the same size as a floppy cable.

In this picture the wider of the two cables is a UDMA 66/100 Your motherboard supports UDMA 66/100/133 the proper cable(s) are supplied with the board. My Soyo board came with three 66/100 and 1 standard (it has RAID).
