View Full Version : Connect to machine on network w/o Internet Access?
Sorry this title probably doesn't say it right.
I have another a few pcs in the office. Well there's a third one that showed up <grin>.
I would like to put it on my local network (Timer warner dsl thing); but I do not want it to have access to the internet - So when on that machine you can't browse the web, and (hopefully) nothing can get in there either. however, I do want access to file shares on the network, and want to let myself remote desktop into the machine if need be.... although it will probably be a linux machine maybe... still pondering.
Is there a way to do this or am I better off just never plugging it into the network :)
thanks for your help in advance,
sincerely,
J__

You can definetely do it. You can copy his mac address into the router settings and blocked port 80 to his machine and that should do the trick. He/she still will be able to access the local network share.
Jiggy,
thanks for the response.
could you elaborate a little on the technique or point me to a faq/or link where I can learn more about how to do this?
thanks for your help,
sincerely,

It wouldn't really work. You wouldn't be able to get to websites but could still access the internet on any other protocol (mail, ftp, etc).
The best way to do this is just manually give the PC an IP address in your LAN range, but no default gateway. Without a default gateway the computer will not be able to reach any network other than the one it is directly connected to.
Thanks for the response Erik.
Maybe I didn't say it very clearly I want to setup a machine on my network(Time Warner provided), which allows me to:
1. NOT connect to the Web from that machine. So when I am on it I cannot open a web browser to the Wild wild Web.
2. And nothing from the Web can come into that machine
3. But, that machine can open a shared folder on the network, although this isn'r really that important, it' more items 1 and 2.
4. I would like to be able to Remote Desktop into that machine.
where can I find info which will help me to implement what you are saying? I'm sorry but I am somewhat new in this area.
thanks for any help you can offer in advance,
sincerely,
J__
NO, you were clear and just blocking port 80 wouldn't do what you want. As I originally mentioned it would block most websites but not anything else to or from the internet.
If you right click on My Network Places, choose Properties, select the TCP/IP option and then Properties again you can put in manula settings. Just leave out the default gateway and the PC will no know how to get off you local network. File sharing and RDC will work fine.
