I have a dilemma. After many years, I just purchased a new Dell desktop running XP media edition. I LOVE my old HP Deskjet 712C. It prints fast and cheaply. I bought a USB to DB25 Female parallel Converter Adapter to connect the parallel port cord to a USB port. The computer would not read the software driver. I called Dell and they worked with me for about 45 minutes to no avail. Said the fault must be in the driver CD.

Now, this was just an inexpensive ($15) no-name converter cord from China. My concern is, even if I buy a more expensive converter - will it work on this printer? Am I expecting too much? If it is just impossible to hook it up this way, I will give in and buy a new one....but I'd rather not.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.

With an old printer as that, you'd probably be more successful buying a parallel pci (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=pci+parallel&Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all&Go.x=0&Go.y=0) card and installing that into an available slot. The drivers just weren't written with usb in mind back then.
