I wasn't testing your expertise or resolve.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
If your Compaq was still under warranty and you go "messin" under the hood swapping devices you would more than likely void your warranty.
I'm not Nvidia or GForce savvy...but there are some here who use them religiously! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I posed this question a little while ago, and got some great response. You may want to check my thread called "The many faces of nVidia". Hope it helps you as much as it did me!

Hmmm... not sure an Athlon 1.2GHz has enough power to really push the GF4 Ti 4600 that much, unless you play at higher resolutions (1280 x 1024 and above). Save yourself some cash and get a Ti 4400 - it's just a bit slower than the 4600 (so it still has major power and speed) but without the insane price premium.
As for the brand names, PNY, Vision Tek, Leadtek, Asus, CardExpert/Gainward, etc. are good names. You should be able to find what you want from one of them, so just use this list.
On a side note, you may want to look at ways of upgrading other components, such as RAM and your Athlon if gaming is your main desire. But once you've tasted DX 8 graphics technology, you may not feel the need to upgrade anything else! Haha, moving from TNT2 M64 to GF4 Ti 4400, that's like going from a 400MHz proc to a 2GHz proc! I envy you who can afford to upgrade right now http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif.
