Hi, does anyone know how to wipe away the leftover thermal paste from the top of CPU core? which chemical (if any) is compatible. I need to change mobo and I would like to re-use my cpu.
thank you

Personally I use carberator cleaner and q-tips you can use alchole but evaporates to fast for me, you don't need much just use enough to soak the swabs.

Go to Walmart and get some Goof Off. It works extremely well in removing old TIM from both the heatsink and core.

Then, use alcohol for a final cleaning.

MJC,
Are you sure that isn't abuse?

Most any degreaser will work as well as an adhesive remover but some leave lubricaters behind which will thin the new application of heat sink grease. Therefore the best but not the only ones are: Acetone, carb cleaner and isopropyl alcohol. But don't abuse this kind, it will kill you. LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nail polish remover (acetone)

works best for me.

Ease down to the Dollar Store and

pick up a bottle for a buck.

Acetone works very well...I bought a lifetime supply at the hardware store for 3 or 4 bucks. I can decrease all the cpu's ever made. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

My vote goes for Acetone, it is used in critical lens cleaning applications because it leaves no residue. (I cleaned MANY pairs of binoculars and various other optical instruments while in the military, acetone is what we used, and for that reason.)

Rubbing alcohol will work fine too, but don't use anything petroleum based or that will leave a residue for CPU cleaning. If it gets into the circuitry of the newer type CPUs it can cause problems.

For heatsinks, carbeurator cleaner or Goof Off will work too, but a second cleaning with alcohol or acetone is recommended to remove any residue.

Make sure you do not touch the CPU or heatsink with your bare fingers after cleaning, acids and enzymes in your skin can react with the thermal compound and break it down, making it much less efficient.

Arctic Silver (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) says the final cleaning should be isopropyl alcohol to remove residue, so I'm thinking nail polish remover must not be pure acetone. Lens cleaning quality acetone leaves no residue.

Hmmm -

How about distilled, denatured isopropyl Alcohol otherwise known as electronics cleaner available at electronic stores

You can guess I got that from the book and I would never want to be accosted in a dark alley and have my life depend on saying that fast three times but.....

Impurities carry excess electrons - not good near PC parts, impurities leave residue that could do who knows what such as when CPU gets hot etc - distillation removes these impurities thus safer around sensitive electronics - Minute risk maybe but risk none the less
