I have an old Acer Aspire computer that the modem has gone out on. This computer has an unusually small case and I can't find an internal modem like the one it had in it. I hate to dump this computer because it has been really a good one for the kind of playing around that we do. Since I can't find an appropriately sized internal modem I was considering buying an external one. Will any external modem work with this computer that runs Windows98? What information from my system do I need to take with me when shopping for one. I've seen some on places like ebay that were under $20 and new in the box. How much should I expect to pay? If this is not enough questions for one post I'm sure I can come up with more... like what are the pros/cons of an external modem? Thanks in advance for the help/advice that I know will be forthcoming.

You can still get Zoom external modems (http://www.zoomtel.com/products/external-modems.html), and they work just as well as an internal one-actually some work even better than most internal modems. You just hook it up to an external serial port, make sure you have the correct COM port configured ( usually COM 3-and most times the software does this for you ) then plug in it's power, your phone line, enter your isp settings and away you go! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I've got an older 33K one here in my closet, it still works fine, but i've been on broadband for the last few years so i don't use it anymore.
I know that Newegg (http://www.newegg.com) has some external modems from $40-up, i would suggest you swing over there and take a look, as their servies can't be beat for online purchasing.

There is no such thing as a stupid question; just an improper one.-my own belief
