During the calving season I would like to be able to setup a remote/wireless webcam in the calving-house about 400yards from the house - so that I can watch out for problems there when working on the computer. There is an electrical mains supply but no telephone line there. Sound transmission would also be nice but not essential.
Has anyone any experience of something like this or whether it is possible and what sort of costs would be involved. Any info much appreciated.

seems like we went over options on this quite a while ago....do a search for sleddog...he was wanting to put a web cam in a lighthouse.

Thanks mjc don't remember seeing it but will do - but don't tell me I have to build a lighthouse!!! if I had one of them all I would need is a telescope and no webcam. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Hehe....no, no lighthouse required, but mainly it will be a function of how long a cable run a particular camera will support.

Thanks to both of you for getting me started but I see now that I'm gonna have to do quite a lot more homework on this. I think any old camera will do since quality not that important and would be under cover. Main choice is between 400yds of some sort of cable or else a wireless setup that would cover the same distance (and without a clear line-of-site - so I don't know if that's possible to do within radio-emission regulations).
sea don't know about the "alarm-clock" type but maybe go with the "pencil-sharpener". Am I right that those type of surveillance video-cams emit radio-signals to view on a TV or do they integrate with a wireless LAN to see on a PC? or either maybe.
Sleddog's setup might work for me, since I have an old 486 that I could setup remotely - except for the 400yds cabling. Couldn't connect to his url though to see the lighthouse view.
