Im having trouble accessing my external harddrive from explorer. The harddrive shows up in the system tray and the computer knows its a mass storage device but it doesnt assign a drive letter to it. It also loads up a driver called USBSTOR.sys

My dads computer loads up a driver called volsnap.sys and it assigns a drive letter to the disk. My computer has volsnap.sys in the system32 drivers folder. Is there a way I can make windows use volsnap.sys. I need a .inf file to specify a driver and I don't have one for volsnap.sys

Any ideas?

Is the drive formatted? If not, then you will need to format it, at which time windows will allocate a drive letter, allowing it to show in Explorer. To format the drive, go to Control panel, Administrative tools > Computer management> Disk management. The disk will show up there as unallocated space.
