I have an old 98 that I wish to install some computer games on that are compatible with Windows 98. How ever once they are installed it says that I do not have enough color to run program I highest I can set my colors to in control panel is 16 what is the problem? I don't think its the montor it self because I pluged the PC into my flat screen and it still had only 16 colors avible.

You have either no video drivers, the wrong drivers or corrupted drivers...you need to find your video card and download the correct drivers for Win98 and install/reinstall them.

Can the PC's [hardware] performance handle that level of colour detail/precision?

I remember my previous PC would crawl along if I tried to set the colour precision too high [drawing 75 screens every second, with each sceen packed with minute differences in colour detail].

My present PC is a little higher performance and can actually handle 16-bit colour.

Are you really saying it only has 16, I repeat 16 colours available, rather than 16-bit colour [2 to the power 16 = 131,000 colour gradations]?

So MJC got it 1st time.
Your PC is using the most basic of generic video drivers.
You need proper drivers installed.
Once you have the correct drivers, go to Device Manager, right-click on the video card and choose "Properties", click on the "Driver" tab, then click on "Update Driver" and when the wizard runs, point it at the ".inf" file in the set of driver files.
