Try pluging it in then turing off your computer then turning it back on sometime this makes it detect the thumb drive. Also try it in as many diferent USB ports as you can just in case the port you have been useing is broke.

Are your USB ports working? Other USB devices OK?
Display devices "By Connection" in Device Manager; how do things look, especially in the USB section under the PCI Bus?

Do you have any bootable disks [floppy or optical] that has one or more programs on it that can work with USB devices?
This would be used to attempt to view the USB "thumb drive" and or contents from outside the Windows environment.

e.g.
1. A bootable Knoppix Linux Live CD.

2. The FREE TRIAL TeraByte programs = "Image for DOS" [image backups of partitions] and "BootIT NG" [partitioning, imaging & more].

3. I customised an "Emergency Boot CD" [EBCD][added USB for DOS divers] so some of the programs on it can see USB devices and manipulate them.
a. "File Manager" could browse the contents.
b. "MS Scandisk" could scan and fix the file system.
c. "Un-format" would do that.
d. "Un-erase" would do that.
e. "DiskEdit" would view the disk content [by-passes the file tables].
f. "Image" for DOS would image the partition contents on it.
g. "WipeInfo" would write zeros to partitions or files.

My thumb drive is Astone Swift 256MbytesNever heard of it. Don't buy off-brand memory of any kind.

I stick to the good manufacturers, like PNY, Memorex, Corsair, etc.
