Hi all

i am new to this site, well ,today i tried burning an audio cd with roxio easy cd and dvd media creator and just when it was about 87 % complete i got a burning error which i did not read cuz i assumed the cd was done so i just clicked ok,then i noticed it was not succesfully burned but right after that, the dvd unit did not read nor play cd or cdrom cds anymore, it can still read and play dvds though, any help will be appreciated.

I have a Piv ,windows xp , 512 memory and 22,3 gb free hard disk space.

Does Roxio log errors?

If so, you may be able to find the error in the log file...

Do you have any bootable CDs, like the Windows install disk?

If so, have you tried to boot to a CD? You may need to enter your BIOS and set the optical drive to be the first boot device.

If it can boot to a CD, then the problem is most likely a software/Windows problem. If it can't then we are looking at a potential hardware problem.

Uninstall the burner through Device Manager and reboot. Try reading cd's again. If ROXIO doesn't recognize it at this point but cd's now read, uninstall ROXIO and reinstall it. Same for DVD media Center.

I dont think Roxio logs errors,

I have to check if i have any bootable cds, but i doubt it, now the thing is, how can i fix the problem in case it is a hardware issue or a software/windows issue ? and most of all, if i delete any programs or applications such as Roxio, how can i reinstall it if the dvd does not read cds nor cdRoms?

I uninstalled the dvd unit/ burner with the Device manager and rebooted, cds still cannot be read either by Roxio or any other applications such as windows media player, on my PC i right click DVD unit and then click explore with a cd in it and nothing is shown, as if there was no cd in the dvd unit D.

I have a compaq presario 900 laptop with a H*L Data Storage (Hitachi/LG) CD-RW/DVD Drive and I have the exact same problem. A DVD will play every time no problems, however any cd will not, even cd's I have used in the past will no longer play. When inserted it makes clicking sounds like it is tring to read it but after 30 sec or so it just stops. When I click on the drive it does not show a disc is there, just nothing. I've had this prob for over a year and am getting frustrated...aaarrrhhh:confused: . I asumed the drive was bad so I bought a new one (identical) but it did the same exact thing. This would logicly suggest that its not a hardware prob. Driver says its up to date, diagnostics show everything is installed and working properly. Any help would be appreciated. I also deleted the high and low filters in the registry, that did not change anything. Problem possibly started after reloading Roxio 5.0 but not sure.:D
