My Compaq has an onboard ESS Allegro sound chip, and i have a Creative PCI Sound Blaster 128, i think the Creative Sound Blaster is better, but i just want to be sure.
Anyone know?

Well, an external card is almost always preferable since it takes the load off the CPU. Some of the newer motherboards have advanced audio capabilities, though.
Go with the SB...just make sure that you can fully disable the onboard in either the BIOS or by using a jumper (it doesn't do any good if you can't disable the darn thing).

If you can't do it in the BIOS or with jumpers you can disable it in device manager.
Yes, but by doing it in DM still allocates the resources on the BIOS level...and frees them up for Windows use...but and DOS/Linux/nonWindows stuff will have to deal with the onboard and the SB...on an i810 mobo...not a pretty picture.

Dude, SufferWell1396, this is just sad! You want me to send you something better or what? I mean, seriously! If someone paid me to take a computer like yours, I'd use the money to send it off for recycling! It's just not frickin' worth it anymore! I've even had major problems setting up i810-based systems for Linux! It's sad when a piece of hardware won't work with any OS!!

Right, I''m just saying if the POS Compaq BIOS and mobo doesn't have a way for him to disable it...

haha :( i had to end up with a Compaq. Heck, id pretty much take anything if anyone had anything better that they dont use. But this computer is just fine for basic stuff, crusing the web and IMing, thats basically all i use it for.... let me refraise, thats all i can use it for.... It will crash if i try to play any games or install any OS's... Sad i know, but this is what i have to work with.
