Dell Memory Upgrade Problem

ok I have a Dell computer and I tried to upgrade my memory which is ECC and I know I purchased the right kind of memory and that I'm not installing more than my PC can handle. Despite this when I fired up my computer I get an error message telling me to replace memory modules and restart machine. It would do this until I removed the new memory and left what was already in there.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?

dell's are strange, they require certain brands to be compatible, so check the website. you can buy the right protocol/speed ecc ram, and it just wont work. I'm no expert but I just know that's how it is on the dell precision 650/670 workstations at least...
