HI guys. I have a Western Digital Raptor 36 gb Hard drive SATA as my main drive. I have used it for 2 computers thus far, currently I 'm running it on an Intel D865Perl mobo, with a P4 3.4 ghz proc. My problem lies in that sometimes when I go to shut down the computer it freezes at the logon screen. My cursor goes from gold (gold cursor scheme used) to the usual white, and then kinda just sits there. I've waited many times in the hope it will shut down but it doesn't and i end up cutting the power. My other computer also had this problem occasionally so I figured it must be the HD since both were completely different computers. I don't want to keep cutting the power for fear of a bsod or HAL.dll is missing screen when I boot up the next time LOL. Wondering if you guys know of any issues with this drive?

I doubt if this is due to the hard drive - its not typical - though feel free to test the drive with the WD diagnostics.
More likely to be some program or something else interfering. Some ideas on http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t228033-computer-freezes-during-shutdown.html
Does it happen if you have booted into Safe Mode; if not it is almost certainly software based. You could also try using task manager to shut down as much as possible prior to shutting down and see if that has any affects.
The hal.dll errors are generally due to boot sector problems or other problems during to start up and not due to shutdown problems per se.
If you have APM you should be able to adjust the power settings to allow you to use the power button to shut down the computer quite normally. A lot of people are unaware of this and believe that one must use the start button to shut down but this is not usually the case with WinXP.
