i personally like Suse distro, but Mandrake or Corel are good versions for a beginner. Redhats' distro is good for most across the board compatibility and support.
i suggest mandrake for a beginner.

There is no such thing as a stupid question; just an improper one.-my own belief
I like Mandrake, SuSe seems pretty nice, heck there are so many...... http://www.linuxiso.org/

I've just bought Mandrake, but I've only got 1 partition free and I'm wondering how it's going to re-organise my drive letters etc. also I read (I think ) in the instructions that it can affect other systems on the same drive.
Instruction books an inch thick, I've hardly started it yet.
I have 7 partitions on HD (done with PM)

Windows won't see the Linux partitions. Your drive letters in Windows should not be affected. If you haven't already checked out this thread (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000833.html), it shows my recommendations for installation, and references a thread in which Rick offers some advice.
Installation is fairly straightforward, but just in case the fit hits the shan, it goes without saying you'll be glad you backed up your data.
Again, the best way to do it isn't to leave a partition free for installation, but to leave unpartitioned free space on your drive for Linux to create it's own partitions.

thanks penta.
I have just read the links and printed them off,
based on what you say, I'll just squeeze my part's up a little & create some free space, that way my drive letters will be unchanged.
seems easy enough http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif but I'll wait until I have the time to do it cautiously and casually.
