Hi I am new to this forum and I am hoping someone can give me some assistance. A couple of days ago I noticed my broadband download speed had been significantly reduced... I am a little concerned because I see the little blue lights of the Local Area Connection Icon in my taskbar are permanantly on, and when I double click it shows I am sending about 10 packets every second and receiving close to 20 every second... I have closed all internet applications (MSN Messenger, Outlook Express etc.) and I still seem to be sending and receiving a lot of data as if I were downloading a large file... The lights on my modem are also flashing as if there was a lot of internet activity.

I am afraid I might have some sort of virus or malware/spyware which has gotten into my system... I run Ad-aware and it found a few problems in some cookies but I cleaned them out and the problem still exists after a restart.

I don't have any virus protection software installed because I never know what is best, and it seems half the viruses are written by the same companys who write the anti virus software...

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The first thing you need to do is download a little program called HijackThis! (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/), or HJT for short. Run it and post the text log here as a post. If the log is too long, split it into several posts. The security experts will then be along to look it over and tell you what's wrong with your computer/internet connection. DO NOT alter anything until told to do so! And follow all directions exactly.

I don't have any virus protection software installed because I never know what is best, and it seems half the viruses are written by the same companys who write the anti virus software...

OMG! no A/V? like trying to cross a motorway, blindfolded!

First Install an Antivirus program, update it, and perform a FULL system scan.

The allegation in the second part of your quote above is at least unwarranted, and possibly libelous. Anti virus programs are not written by people who write viruses.
A recommendation for an anti virus program:- AVG free edition. Download it from free.grisoft.com.

whats the big deal about no A/V? I've owned computers for about 10 years and only ever been infected twice before... once was the blaster thing which I managed to fix by downloading a fix off the internet the second time I just reinstalled the operating system... There is nothing wrong with crossing a motorway blindfolded... I just do it at night when there is minimal traffic and I listen for the openings.

I'll download AVG free edition and run a scan but I refuse to pay money for virus protection

Ok, I have to eat my words here... I tried downloading the free version of AVG but it wouldn't install for some reason, so I finally bit the bullett and bought an antivirus programme (The Shield Antivirus 2007) I read a couple of reviews that said it was the best value for money so I thought what the hell, it was only $30. Installed it along with the firewall and did a full scan - It found about 4 virus' and removed them... I did a restart and and started surfing the net and OMG it was like I had broadband for the first time! My download speed had increased 10x to what it was 2 days ago and everything was working propperly.

I guess antivirus software is important afterall... my bad! Thanks for the help anyway, keep up the good work.

Cheers

Yes classicsoftware, they do.

NZ Scythe, please download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Everything appears to be running as sweet as the day I installed windows, I hope I have got everything out. Thanks guys for the help.

Is it normal for my antivirus software to pick up viruses or infections every day or so? mine always seems to pop up with a new one all the time - is this just normal internet activity? I always click on repair and it seems to take care of it but thought I'd ask - I'm new to A/V software...

Also my firewall software "The Shield Firewall" seems to restrict me from viewing you tube videos, I can't see how to allow the videos... other than closing the firewall program down, any ideas?

Open Hijackthis and place a check next to:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wmvdiag] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmvconf.exe

Close all open program and browser windows and click fix checked.

Re-boot and post a fresh log.

The answer to that is NO. What virus is it reporting?

Next you need to run Windows Update and apply all patches.

After that you need to run the Secunia Software Inspector. (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) Please post all of the out of date software so we can help you update it.

Your log looks clean.

1) Update Windows.

2) Go to Secunia and let us know the status of your other software.

3) Provide the information about what viruses are being detected. Are they still being detected?

4) how is the system running.
