Notice I didn't ask "what's the best".
I'm looking for a mid size replacement power supply for a nForce2 MB w:
AMD Athlon 2800,
2 HDD's,
2 optical drives,
audio card,
Win 2k,
Real gamming applications aren't a issue,
I don't overclock,
Lastly, fairly quite, not the quietist, but reasonable so.

But, I do want to plan for a replacement processor & MB that would be considered mid end at best. I have a 300watt Sparkle Power supply now. It is on the noisy side and doesn't have a on-off switch on the rear. On my other box I have a Antec TruePower 330 that I like ans wonder if the next size up would be ok or are they as good or better choices now since I haven't shopped lately.

I don't want to go much over, say $80 or $100.
Input?

For an old board like that something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023) will be plenty.

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153028) ought to do it then. 500W is plenty even if you add a couple hard drives.

If you really want more than that you could go for this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153029) or this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153042). But honestly I think it's overkill to go to 600W unless you are planning on adding a couple Raptors in raid and a powerful video card. With a NF2 board you are not likely to do either.

Those are really more than I wanted to spend.

And so is this; :D

Why/where would anyone want/need something as this?

I was looking around 400, maybe 450 watts. Regarding noise, are there any ones that are noticeable quieter than others without going above $70 or $80??

The original 430W will work just fine for you. It has plenty of cables and is pretty quiet. I have two of them running older machines right now.

Hehe, well if you are running eight 15000 RPM SAS hard drives in raid, two high end v-cards in SLI or crossfire, high end sound card, TV tuner card, Core2 EE or a couple of dual or quad core Xeon's on a 2 CPU board... :D

There are people that need them.
