View Full Version : Weird issue not covered

Ok, so I've read all the common solutions. My problem is a tad different.

Today, I'm running a 350W old style ATX power supply with an adapter that gives me a 24 pin connection [don't ask]. It works great, but I need more juice and I need to be able to add a SATA drive.

So, I bought my self a coolmax 500W ATX power supply. When I plug it all in, no beep. If I use the adapter over the 20 pin connection, still no beep. If I plug only the 4 pin and 24 pin connectors in, still no beep.

But the weirdest part, everything spins and my power tester reads that all is working when I plug the new supply in!!

So, if I leave all configs the same, and plug the old 350W in, boots to win XP right away!

Any insight is greatly appreciated...

System details below:

CPU: Pentium D 805
MB: Asus P5RD2-VM [integrated graphics]
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Memory: 1.5G 533mhz DDR2
Storage: EIDE x2 [I want SATA!]

Thanks again!

Edit: I forgot to add, as far as I can tell, my case has no power LED, so that connector is naked. It works in this configuration with the 350W supply. I did not touch the case connectors at all.

Piggybacking your help request onto another's becomes confusing....especially, onto a thread as old as the one you chose to jump into...

I've split your post off and started a thread that can focus on your computer issues.

Also, welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Some motherboards require a -5V power rail from the Power supply unit.
If this is your PSU
COOLMAX V-500 ATX 500W Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159062)
it does not have a -5V rail.

I think that the ATX 2.0 specification removed the -5V rail requirement.

Sorry about the misplacement. I only just discovered this forum via google last night.

I bought a 600w CoolerMaster today at Compusa, in hopes that it was just the one I had at home that was no good. I just checked the package and the new one does in fact have a -5V rail. Hopefully that fixes the problem versus the 500W one that is sitting at home (without the -5V rail).

I'll update the forum after I try my luck in a few hours.

Thanks for the help!

Eureka!

It had to be the -5V rail as the new 600W PS that included it worked perfectly!

Thanks so much for the help, rond36 :)
