Hi All..

I decided to upgrade my PC recently. I am a complete novice!

I brought used from Ebay from different vendors :

ASUS 8N SLi Deluxe M/B SKT 939
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (guaranteed working) alledgedly
ATI X300SE PCI-E G. Card (good working order) and
1 x 512MB PC3200 400Mhz DDR / 8 x Matrix chips

with some help I have assembled it.. added a Y cable that was needed for M/B and a 20 - 24 pin adapter (from power supply)

Nothing at all at the screen

Have tried..
Graphics card in another machine - fine
PCI Graph card on this board instead of PCI-E - no difference
More powerful PSU - no difference.
Keyboard in, no difference
Ram in/out - no diff.

Processor fan turns, as does the MB fan
Lights on front light up.

Finally, machine beeps, 1 long 2 short .. i have heard this twice and then switched off every time.. The machine has probably been run for a minute at the most.. should be long enough to get something on screen?

Please help..
I have no machine that I can test the board / chip on.. all office PC's are not athlons...

I guess getting the board tested somehow at a shop is only answer..

thanks
John

Award BIOS beep code = 1 long, 2 short = BIOS POST unable to initialise the Video Card (http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm#05).

What type of video card is it [PCI-E]?
Are the default BIOS configuration settings [for the video card] suitable for this type of card [PCI-E]?
Are the contacts [on the card and in the slot] clean, and connecting?
Isopropyl alcohol is the right thing for cleaning these I believe.

You say a PCI video card won't work either....Hmmm.

I wonder if the video is being "shadowed" to RAM and the RAM isn't working?
But then the RAM tests come before the video tests, so you should get RAM failure beeps [something other than 1 short, 2 long].
Especially if you remove the RAM...
I'm surprised you don't get [different] RAM failure beeps when you remove the RAM.

Here's part of a generic Phoenix BIOS's POST...
48h Check video configuration against CMOS
49h Initialize PCI bus and devices
4Ah Initialize all video adapters in system
--------------------------------------------
4Bh QuietBoot start (optional)
4Ch Shadow video BIOS ROM
4Eh Display BIOS copyright notice

thanks Syl..

I have decided to take it to a shop :( as i just want to know..

Hopefully the RAM isnt comatible... but as you say , that should give a different error to 2-1-1

have you triend memory tester such as memtest86?

"could this be it"
1. That was my very 1st thought...
Reason being you said it made "no difference" with the RAM out or in.
If that means you get the same beep pattern whether the RAM is out or in, then that suggests...
a. Either the RAM is faulty...
OR
b. Those beeps are for some test that's failing BEFORE the 1st RAM test in the sequence that generates beeps, and there aren't too many of those [the 1st RAM test comes very early in the sequence].
In the Phoenix BIOS's POST shown above, the only such test is...
16h 1-2-2-3 BIOS ROM checksum...
And it doesn't seem likely that would fail.

2. Only problem is the beep pattern you quoted.
Is it really 1 long, 2 short?

hmm..
well I took it to a PC shop and they charged me £10 to say it works fine with the ram they have :)
They want £45 for the stick tho.. just a 512.. I think i will go back to ebay :)

thanks Syl, HomeSA will let you know..
