I had Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall on my PC up till a couple of weeks ago.

Purchased the licence and used for six months, have a registration key.

For no apparent reason the desktop icon disappeared and when clicking on kerio in the startup menu. a drop down menu appeared showing "folder empty".

Have tried to reinstall this software, can down load it, but halfway through the installation procedure, a message appears stating " cannot proceed, a higher version of Kerio is installed on this computer".

I have removed all traces of the original installation, as far as I know, yet I still keep getting this message, and cannot get it to install.

Has anyone any suggestions please.......o/s windows XP

There are several infections now that will attack your security software and either prevent it running, block download or otherwise disable it... I suggest you post a HijackThis log to see if we can find any clues...

http://www.merijn.org/programs.php

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one you create like C:\HJT or the Desktop. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

and then run this to see if it finds any evidence of tampering:

* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
Then click the Start Scanning button below.
You should get a notification (bar on top) to install the activeX. Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols-faq.shtml).
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

I assume that the warning about the virus in System Restore was from F-Secure... It is a good idea to go ahead and reset System Restore...

Turn off System Restore
To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Select the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.
Turn on System Restore
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.

There isn't anything really clearly wrong with your HJT log... You seem to be running a lot of things that duplicate each other, like 2 different cleaners at the same time and that can interfere with function...

I don't see any Kerio Service running in your HJT log and that usually means it won't interfere with an install...

I think we need to scan deeper... The best program for that is offline right now, so go with this:

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

and then run this to see if it comes up with anything:

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Sorry about the delay in getting this silent runner file to you, I don't seem to be able to get the file into the forum, the file is to large, tried to make it into smaller segments but would not copy and paste; printed, scanned and filed the 7 x A4 pages and tried to send as an attachment but each page was to large.........
any suggestions please.

I don't understand what problem you are having... Silent Runners is usually a large log, but it can be copied and pasted in segments quite easily... What program did you save the log in?? It is typically in Notepad... If it isn't a txt file, just save it as one and then copy/paste it here... Please be clear about what the problem is if you still can't do it... DO NOT post it as an attachment...

Sorry about that little hiccup............tried to send it direct from notepad without saving it first.

Your log looks okay and I am running out of possibilities here... I have one more scan to try:

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip) and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
Boot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode).
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Sorry to be such a pain.........

Have followed your instructions up to ......

"In safe mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose "Extract all"

BUT.......The file keeps arriving as SDFix.exe and there is no "Extract all"

Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong ?

It looks like the author changed it to an exe file, so you can just skip the part about extracting it and run it per the instructions...

You need to go to Add or Remove Programs and remove these:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11

Then install the latest version from here:

http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0_10-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg

Otherwise your logs look okay... Are you still having a problem... Is Kerio the only program that is giving you a problem?? I may be necessary to try another firewall (one of the free ones) to see if you can install and run that...

Things in your Trusted Zone have almost complete access to your computer... If you are not certain this site can be trusted, I suggest you fix this with HJT:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.LEARNDIRECT.CO.UK

Have deleted the four j2se runtime entries and installed the latest version, as you suggested.
Yes the problem is still there, kerio is the only program I am having difficulty with, have now installed the free firewall comodo and it is working fine.

Thank you very much for your assistance and patience in this matter, could I impose on your goodwill just once more.......

Have tried to delete the file
015 - Trusted Zone: *.LEARNDIRECT.CO.UK in HJT, but its still there everytime I reboot. I would like to get rid of it. But not experienced enough to experiment with HJT

Did you open a HJT scan and put a check by:

015 - Trusted Zone: *.LEARNDIRECT.CO.UK

Then close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked... If you did, try this:

Please download the Fix_Protocol reg file from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/Nel/FixP.zip and unzip it to your desktop.
Double click Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.

Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Mission complete.................

It worked when I merged Fix_Protocol _Zones_ranges.reg with the registry and rebooted.

Many Thanks.

Just been tidying up after a hectic couple of days and going over what we have done..........one thing puzzles me slightly.

Going back to one of your previous messages that started "You need to go back to add and remove programs".

You remarked that "Things in your trusted zones have almost complete access to your computer" could you please elaborate on " complete access"

What sort of things can items in trusted zones do, on or to, my computer, and do they have access to material on my computer.

Budfred
02-21-2007, 08:49 AM
The Trusted Zone allows the entity on the other end to ignore most limitations set by your protection software and can theoretically do pretty much anything to your computer including taking it over remotely... If you trust that entity, it is not a problem... At work, the IT dept has that kind of access to my computer and that is fine... At home, no one has that kind of access to my computer, I am not that trusting...

Here is my prevention speech to help avoid future infection:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....

http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955

Please post the solution you got from Kerio so that others may benefit from it...

I am astonished at your revelation concerning the trusted zone aspects, concerning security on my PC.

Never in my wildest dreams, did I think that I could allow this to happen.

Everyone of the entries in my Highjack file will receive very close scrutiny in future, problem being for now, what to get rid of and what to keep, and how does one prevent these entities from becoming Trusted in the first place.
Obviously i've got a lot of reading to do to satisfy the questions that come flooding to mind.

Regarding posting the kerio correction instructions in the forum, I've been trying to do this all day, but my copy and paste dosn't want to paste into the forum. I will type them out tomorrow for all to see.

Oh, please don't type them out... If you could copy/paste them in a PM to me, you can do it here... Try highlighting them, pressing Ctrl-C and then once you have a Reply window here, press Ctrl-V....

If you read that article that I posted a link for, it will tell you more about Trusted Zones... Don't try it right now, however, the site is down...

Budfred,
It helps not to be dislexic when explaining how to paste/copy,, or is it copy/paste? ;)

Control c is copy, control v is paste... :)

At first attempt this morning copy / paste worked ????????

In answer to my request for assistance from the kerio support team, to resolve the problem detailed at the beginning of this thread, here is their reply, which proved successful...........

Thank you for contacting Sunbelt Software. I am sorry for the install
issue that you are having. We have a way of working around this:

1. Please download an older version of Kerio from the following link:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/kerio423.exe

2. You can click on the above link and choose Save. Save this file to
your desktop.

3. Now you can double-click the new installer file that was saved on
your desktop to begin the installation.

4. Restart your machine

5. Now you will see a purple shield icon down in the system tray by your
clock. Right-click on this link and choose Exit. This will close Kerio
down

6. You can delete the Kerio install icon off of your desktop now. You do
this by clicking once on the icon and choosing Delete on your keyboard.

6. Now we can have you update to the latest version. Please click on the
below link and save this file to your desktop: http://tinyurl.com/y4ad7d

7. Once the save is completed, you can double-click the new install icon
for Kerio and this will perform an upgrade for Kerio.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

..................End of Kerio message.................
