I have been using a Netgear router (54 Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v4 is what it says on the bottom.) Connecting the modem directly to my PC, the internet works fine. Whenever we connect the modem to the router to the PC, the internet gets *significantly* worse. I haven't even started getting into the wireless adapter situation, but just based on the fact that the wired computer's internet doesn't work, I thought the problem was with the router. So I switched to a D-Link router (Model no. Dl-614 it says.) That didn't help. We tried turning off the PC, router, and modem and turning them back on in every possible order with the D-Link and the Netgear routers... no luck. We tried replacing cables... still no luck.
I've managed to get the wireless computers' internet to work just as well as the wired one's, but it still isn't right. Sorry if this is a common problem (hopefully it is something easy to fix)... but I would so very greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out.
Thanks in advance,
Nicole

Hello Nicole and welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
I would not say this is a common problem, but certainly one that does occur. How about a few obvious questions for your non-common problem ;)
Have you been in contact with Netgear or D-link tech support? They see and hear common problems day in and day out and might have a bit more experience with this specific issue.
Is your internet connection “*significantly* worse”, or non-existent?
Two different routers and what appears to be the same problem indicates improper connection or set-up. Are you connecting the cable from modem to router into the routers “Up-link/WAN/Modem” connection?
Have you completed the routers set-up procedure and allowed internet access?
That should get us started
Good luck

I thought this was tech support. Just kidding :D I'll try a phone number and see if they have anything to offer.
To answer your questions though, the internet is working... it's just slow/instable enough to be a pain. I'd say my web pages actually load about 60% of the time.
The line from the modem is plugged into the modem-hole and the other line goes from the first router port to the PC.
I have lights on the modem that say PC, CABLE, SEND, RECEIVE, & POWER... everything is on (or at least blinking rapidly) except the SEND (significant or no?)
On the router. all the important lights are either on or blinking rapidly.
I read something in another thread about disabling the firewall... I'll try that and maybe it will help. Until then, any other advice?

Sounds like a setting conflict between router and PC. I can not be on much longer today so Q&A will take a bit longer then Netgears phone support. Sorry to brush you off to them but I honestly believe it will be the most effective method.
Let us know

Didn't even need to call support. Found the little reset button on the back of the router, pushed it, and now everything works fine. I am a technical genius. :p
