The system is running WINXP PRO with a 160G Seagate ATA 100 HD. Lately, when opening or closing some programs (games, word, photo), there is a disturbing grinding sound. It doesn't do it all the time but enough to be a concern. It will also make this sound when closing programs. Only once did I hear the drive continue to cycle up, down, up down, etec until I shut down the pc. It hasn't done that since. I checked for spyware and viruses but nothing is apparent. Should I replace the drive while it is still working and my data is accessible?

It is a sign of a failing drive. I would recommend backing up any important data ASAP before doing anything else with the drive. Then test the drive with manufacturers diagnostics. If it fails pick up a new drive.

I have seen drives make strange noises and last for two more years, and then I have seen them die the next day.
