Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a laptop but I wanted to get some advice first on what the differences are between the different types of RAM out there today. I know that there's PC3200, PC3000, PC2700, PC2400 etc. What is the differences between theses types (besides the price)? Do they run at difference bus rates (frequecy's)? Thanks,

Laptop technology is typically about a year behing desktop technology, even further in some components. There isn't really an option for which type of DDR RAM you want. Portables are so proprietary by nature that you're at the mercy of the manufacturer as to what they want to put in it. If they let you customize a few options like Dell does, well you get lucky, but I believe PC1600/2100 is the max DDR speed you can get in a laptop. And laptops are the only new computers that still use slow old SDRAM on a regular basis.

Just fyi, tho, you can calculate the bandwidth of RAM from the speed in MHz and vise versa. PC2100 RAM does about 2.1GB per second at 266MHz. PC1600 does about 1.6GB per second at 200MHz. Use these values to figure out the others. Kinda sounds like a math book problem, doesn't it?...
