external hard missing

I just installed a new external hd via usb 2.0. It was working for a few hours but then it just disappeared on me. I could no longer find it in windows explorer (currently using Vista Home Premium) Right now I turned it off and will try again later. The enclosure seems to be a little warm--could this be an issue?

ok,

i opened the enclosure and found a jumper. i just moved the jumper and it worked!!! i really don't know why, but it worked. does anyone know how this fixed the problem??

It sounds like you have a power or other cabling problem Try another USB cable maybe and is the external self-powered or does it get all of its power from the USB connection.

If you want to discriminate between a problem with the HDD and the cabling/enclosure then try the drive slaved inside the PC.

I tried checking the cords and even tried using another usb cord from my brother's external hard drive. still nothing. so i just ended up bringing the thing back and exchanged it for something else. they tested it there and they had the same problem as me--all is well now.
