I have been having trouble with my computer freezing when my children play online video games. (WoW)

I have checked everything, and the HD seems to be going bad, so I bought a new Seagate 300G HD and installed it. It works correctly as slave drive, transfering etc normally.

But I finally decided that I wanted to see if the HD was the problem, so I bought Norton Ghost and did a by the book transfer from my old drive to the new Seagate (formerly the slave). I clicked MBR as well as to change the drive to the boot drive. I switched the cable clearly marked primary and slave appropriately and restarted.

Each time I restart, I get the error 1962: No operating system found. I get no where in the boot sequence. Getting a quick flash for my video card, then IBM (I suspect bios), then the error message.

I have redone the transfer several times, with and without the MBR (main boot record) with the same results. Switching the cable back to original primary/slave configuration results in a normal boot with everything intact it seems.

I was under the impression that Ghost would transfer EVERYTHING from one HD to the other, and the new HD would run in the same fashion, with System software and all Program files intact.

I know very little about computers, so there could me myriad reasons, and my knowledge is about tapped. So if you have any ideas... I would love to hear them.

When you switch the position of drives on the cable, you also must move the jumpers (little plastic caps) on these drives. These jumpers designate whether the drive will work as a "master" (end connector) or "slave" (middle connector) on the channel.
I gather that the old drive was set to "master" and the new 300GB was set to factory-default "cable select" which got them conflicting when you swapped their positions on the cable.

Now either;

1) Set the new drive to "master", and the old one to "slave", or
2) Set them both to "cable select".

Your drives probably have a little diagram drawn somewhere on them that will tell you which jumpers to move to get the desired effect.

kiosk's suggestion is likely to cure your problem. If it doesnt then check the BIOS setup to see if both drives are recognised there. You should also be able to switch the boot device from the old to the new hard drive on a modern motherboard and that would mean you wouldnt have to physically swap them around. One other possiblity is that the resulting ghosted partition needs to be marked as active (using BiNG for example) though Ghost should have seen to that aspect. Haven't used Ghost for sometime but when cloning drive-to-drive the software often hides one or the other hard drive. Cloning is often best done by using software from the new drive's makers and not 3rdParty tools, such as Ghost.

PS Which OS and SP? seeing this is a 300GB drive - though if the OS saw it all when it was a data drive the large drive aspect shouldnt be problematic.

See HERE (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/booterr.htm) and click on "Operating System not found" in the menu at left.
Then click "Troubleshoot this here" to go HERE (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/hdd/file_BadCorruption.htm).

Are the BIOS's configuration settings suitable to make the NEW HDD work once the switchover is made?
e.g. Are both sets of drive parameters ALWAYS correct [whether switched this way or that] because all drives are set to "Dynamically Auto-Detect" [Auto] at each startup?
Is the correct method of drive translation being used [a mystery to me].
My old PC uses "IDE HDD Block Mode" & "Logical Block Addressing" [whatever that is].
Is the BIOS 48-bit LBA capable? [Able to address big drives as well as small?]
Was your old/smaller HDD less than 120 GB?
Did the old HDD have a DDO installed?
The HDD manufacturers utilities often deal with any such problems during a drive transfer.
