Hi, I was wondering that I actually don`t need a floppy drive for my new pc because my operating system installs directly from the CD. For other drivers i can use the internet and most peripherals come with drivers on a CD. What u think?

Many files and drivers are small enough to fit on a floppy and I use them to share files (resume's, family pictures) and other jobs (drivers installs and small files like games) as well. It is much quicker than burning to a disk or retrieving something online over and over for each pc so my answer would be: Is $14 dollars that big of a deal when considering the overall cost of a good pc? It's benefits FAR outweigh it's downsides IMHO.

Bootable floppies can be a lifesaver when...
...your registry is corrupted.
...your computer gets a virus.
...you decide that getting a copy of Norton's Ghost is a good idea (it is).
...you have a need for a program like Partition Magic or Ranish's Partition Manager.
...you need to flash your BIOS.
I'm with Fruss Tray Ted on this one; FDD's are well worth the minimal expense.

Hi Andrea,
I would recommend a floppy drive! I have a computer without one and find that I can't fdisk and format the hdd. I can run the manufacturers restore disk but can't do a regular fdisk and format without being able to use a standard bootdisk. And looking at your sig...how will you format the damn C:!? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I wouldn't own a computer without one got 7 floppy drives sitten here just in case one breaks down for the price there handy little gadget.Hopefully one day they'll makem about the size of a flashcard for a camera with just as much storage. I would not just rely on the bootable CD to much can go wrong.

everyone asks me why I have 2 fdd's on my pc.
well it seemed a good idea at the time ! & I thought might as well fit it as leave it in the drawer.
But it does come in VERY useful, & I'll always have 2 fitted from now on.
1: Copy Floppy to Floppy
2: Check Floppy/faulty fdd
3: Both floppies open for examin/transfer of data
4: transfer data from several floppies onto one
are my main uses,
also I carry a floppy disc & CDRW with me, I can run progs & copy data from the CDRW on any CD rom, make changes/notes (if required) onto floppy disc then transfer to CDRW when I get home.

A floppy is the one piece of legacy PC equipment that has proven itself over & over again to be indispinsable; as posted above, a standard startup floppy can provide a troubleshooting tool as no other device can.
Trust me, no matter what OS you run, if you can boot to a floppy-you can fix it!

I'm going to say this and then run otherwise I think I'll get a wedgie.
I refuse to have a floppy drive in the same house, nay the same block that my computer is in. I hate those floppies with such a passion, They make me spitting mad... hang on I have to wipe my screen. The last time I used a floppy was about 8 yrs ago.
That said I have 5 networked computers up and running with enough parts laying around to build another. So I guess if you only had one computer that can't boot to CD then maybe.... No I would buy another mobo instead of installing a floppy
