Hi everybody.
My friend has a pentium 3 800MHZ, with xp professional sp2 installed. The problem is when we shut down the pc from windows everything goes fine, that is windows shuts down normally and also there is nothing on the monitor, but we can hear the cpu fan still running, meaning the mobo is still ON. As such we have to forcefully press on the power button for a few seconds to turn off the pc completely.

Do you think its a problem in BIOS or there is something wrong with the mobo?

Thanks and bye.

How long do the fans keep running? Sometimes, after you turn off a computer there is still juice left inside the unit. I don't think there are any hardware issues.

Can you determine which fan it is? As already mentioned there may not be a problem. What happens if you don't do anything? New problem? Have you done anything to the computer?

Is power management enabled or disabled in the BIOS Setup?

Perhaps Windows is trying to shut down the PC, but the BIOS power management isn't doing the job of switching off all power [from the PSU][when told to do so by Windows].

Got to check that. But since i have cleared CMOS and set everything(atleast) to default. What i think is the motherboard is faulty.

It's the Operating System that's telling the PC to shut down, but it isn't working.

So how about using Knoppix loaded from a Knoppix Linux Live CD (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php) to tell the PC to shut down and see whether it does or not?

I will give Knoppix a try. By the way i have installed windows several times just to see whether its the OS which is the culprit. another issue is that after using the computer around 20 mins the screen goes whte with black lines. Swap RAM but still the same. May its time to bury that dying board,

You say the CPU fan is still running ?
1) Rather that checking it, check whether the PSU fan is spinning or not.
If the PSU fan is not spinning it means that there is no power supply into the system and it is impossible for the CPU fan to spin.
2) Have you installed any extra cooling fans that has power supply from a separate power outlet or for any other devices.
