I'd like to put a 2-line display in my case. I wonder if vfd is worth the significant price difference over lcd. I've heard that Matrixorbital makes excellent displays and they have them attached to drive bays (no soldering for this guy) and with built-in keypads. Any opinions welcomed

I think the lack of replies is because we're all a little puzzled about your question. It sounds like you want a display on your computer, like the "33" (MHz) LED display that was on my old i486 machine. At work, I have a Unix box that sports a LCD display, but I haven't seen any on PCs for years. They're not very useful.
Florescent displays draw a bit of power, and are a bit fragile, but a back-light for a LCD display also uses a couple Watts. If you're powering off a PC, this amount of power is not significant. But since such things are not part of a typical Wintel PC, I have to think maybe you're talking about a different kind of system???

In the quiet of evening I'm a bit of a modder, minus the LAN parties. I'd like the gadget to look good but at the same time be functional, such as having it monitor temps, fans, e-mail, time, weather, stocks, whatever. Just a little hobby, not quite an obsession.

I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with these devices who might know the quality of their respective displays.

Hi Nooyawkah-
I just happened to read This (http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/supergeek/story/0,24330,3389013,00.html) article, and I thought you might be interested.
It also has links to companies that sell different displays.

THIS (http://www.noritake-elec.com/colors.htm) manufacturer listed some intersting benefits of the VFDs. Also, you might want to take note of the 3rd party color filters that might come in handy for modding! ;) I wonder if they might be able to be adapted to the MatrixOrbital VFD console?

Thanks for the suggestions. The LCDC software looks like a winner. The page with the filters really gave me some idea. By the way, MatrixOrbital also has some filters, though not as many.
