OK---I admit I didn't really know what I was doing but there was a great deal at Staples on an internal DVD drive and all I have is a CD rewritable and DVD player on my desktop. The guy at staples told me all I had to do was put it inside (I have previously added memory, etc) and XP would recognize it. ---JUST NOT TRUE!!!! Now my computer won't recognize my cd or dvd drive!!!! I did a system setback to a week before--still no cd or dvd drive recognized----Then I decided to do a complete system recovery and got an error message that told me to stop and cache --- shadow --- etc. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS IS. Now what do I do??? I opened the computer back up to make sure everything was adequately plugged back in. I AM DESPERATE--NOW I HAVE NO CD OR DVD ON THIS COMPUTER (that it recognizes). I'm sure somebody can help me--I'm just at a complete loss on what to do now. Any help someone could give me would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the http://http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.
Did you set the jumpers on the CD/DVD drives?
There are a set of pins on the back of the drives, there should be a little plastic "jumper" connecting two pins. See the picture in post #4 in this thread (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25502).
You need to either set the jumper on the drive on the last connector of the ribbon cable to master, and set the other drive to slave. Or set them both to cable select. There should be a diagram on the top of each drive showing where to set the jumper for that drive and configuration, or as in the picture they are usually labled near the pins.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!! I did not know about the jumpers. The only instructions that came with the drive were about the software installation. I truly hope EVERYONE knows how to do that. I pulled the new drive out and set it just like the one I pulled out. Closed the case and turned it on---MAGICALLY it found the new DVD drive and my CD drive was recognized again. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help!!! THANKS AGAIN!!

"Master/Slave, Dominance/Submissiveness,, Whips/Chains"
Thank goodness I'm not the only one who noticed that.
I thought it gave a little glimpse into the thought processes of the person[s] who decided to invent/use those terms. :(
