I've never used grease or any compound before when installing a cpu. I always just went with the stock heatsink and fan and used the pre-applied tape.
Will be installing the P4 2.4B/533 FSB in new unit. I doubt I will do any overclocking. Should I go through the trouble of removing the tape from stock heatsink and apply grease or paste? Are there any REAL benefits?Or should I consider a different heatsink and fan?
Just want to set up this fairly pricy cpu with the most favorable conditions. Is grease worth the bother?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

You'll be fine with the tape...the grease might get you a degree or two cooler, but it won't make any practical difference to you...

I tried my Athlon XP with the thermal pad and then with grease and the temps were 1 degree lower with the grease...so no, IMHO it ain't worth scraping the stuff off...

I don't use grease unless I need to remove and reinstall a HSF. The thermal tape on the stock P4 heatsink works just fine and any thermal grease or paste could void your warranty, if you need to rma the processor and Intel finds gerase or paste down in the hole in the heat spreader. Once that stuff gets in that hole it is imposible to get out.
