If those 2 media types previously wrote at 8X and 16X, then see if uninstalling and reinstalling Nero helps.

Does the problem happen with different brands of media?

The 4x and 8x stuff are both supposed to be 8x support!! It is labeled "Tech.com".
And the 16X WRITEX media is shown to be 8X in NERO recently!! The last i saw, i could only write 8x on WRITEX, although i've written on WRITEX at 16x before. One thing i see is that NERO and every other burning software is suddenly supporting the exact half speed of every media's supposed supported speed.

Maybe your burner is 'half' dead... ;)

Can't be i bought the drive 3 months ago, i feel that it may be a driver conflict, but can't just figure it out.

Try updating the firmware.

I don't know about the other brand but I use Verbatim discs exclusively. In fact I am burning a 16x verbatim right now.

Out of the 1000+ Verbatim discs I have burned I have never had a coaster with Verbatim until recently. I have a Lite-on 16X burner (3 months old) and a just recently purchased a Lite-on 20X burner. After getting the 20X I started using it to burn (at 16x) and every other disc would fail about a third of the way through. I updated the firmware and still the same problem. After about four coasters I went back to the 16x burner using the same batch of DVD's and have not had a problem since.

I am disappointed in the new burner, especially since the 16x works just fine. I think once they release another firmware update it will be fine. I will wait for awhile to see if the problem is solved by new firmware. If not I will RMA it.

Fortunately the only reason I got the new burner was because my 5 year old Toshiba DVD-ROM was dying. So all I really need it for is to read DVD's, which it does that fine.
