In most modern systems all you need to do is uninstall all drivers and software having to do with the onboard video in Add/Remove Programs, reboot, then shut the computer down, install the new video card and the system will automatically disable the onboard video when it detects the new video card installed. Then install the latest drivers for your new video card, which you should have already downloaded.
If you are dealing with an old computer (4 or 5 years old) you may need to go into the BIOS to disable to onboard video after uninstalling the drivers.
If in doubt about whether or not you need to disable the onboard video look in the manual or help pages of the manufacturers website. If this is a system with a PCIe x16 slot you can be sure it is modern enough that you won't have to worry about it.
In most cases you can even just connect the new card and install the drives.
Technically the best option would be to use Add/Remove programs if there is anything listed for the onboard video. Then remove the drive from device manager, shutdown the PC and install the new card. The it will ask for ne drivers.

Also, occasionally on older computers you will find you have to set a jumper to switch from onboard video.

There is no single guide that can show you how to install a vid card. There are 3 different slot types (PCI, AGP, PCIe) and various procedures depending on the age of the hardware, the chipset, the manufacturer (OEM or custom build), and the OS. Give us some more info and we can steer you in the right direction.
