I recently re-installed windows 2000 onto a Gateway tower from a few years ago. I installed a 3Com Etherlink wireless PCI card that was working on another computer, and I can't get it to work. I have wireless access via other computers in the house, but this one says "network cable unplugged", even though it is a wireless card. If I plug the computer in via ethernet cable, there is connectivity. I also installed a D-Link wireless USB adapter, and no success with that either. It is listed as "Local Area Connection 4" of type "LAN" (as are the others). It is also now listed as "network cable unplugged." There is no "Wireless Network Connection" option listed.

For the first (PCI) card, I have seemingly downloaded the latest drivers from the 3Com site, and with Gateway network drivers as well. What do I need to do in order to get it to recognize its own wireless nature?

I've never used 2k but try this:

Remove the card from Device Manager and power down. Remove the card. Reboot. Install the drivers for the card. Power down and reinstall the card. Windows 'should' find it and install it.

If still no connection:
Start> Run> type inetwiz> Select use 'LAN' as connection and follow prompts to end. Try browser again.
