From what I can tell by using the HijackThis Tutorial, these logs don't look so bad. When I start Windows,I get a pop up that says "The Program was unable to connect to the update server. Check your network connection and try again"

When I reboot, there are 3 error's in the event viewer under system:

1 The Bluetooth Serial Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

2 The Bluetooth Port Client Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

3 The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
BTKRNL

I did have a Bluetooth device, but I ununstalled it through add/remove programs.

When I shut down Windows or try to reboot, there is an "End Program Message", then it takes about 10-15 minutes to shut down.

I have just completed a defrag.

I am out of ideas

You have some issues in your HJT log that need to be fixed... Please open a HJT scan and put checks by:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearc...p=ZSzeb01244US

I suggest fixing this as well... it eats resources and doesn't really speed things up for Office enough to be worth it:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Since you removed Bluetooth, fix these too:

O9 - Extra button: @btrez.dll,-4015 - {CCA281CA-C863-46ef-9331-5C8D4460577F} - C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\btsendto_ie.htm (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @btrez.dll,-4017 - {CCA281CA-C863-46ef-9331-5C8D4460577F} - C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\btsendto_ie.htm (file missing)

This is legit, but may be unnecessary to run...

O23 - Service: spkrmon - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\spkrmon.exe

After you finish checking the items you choose to fix, close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove all versions of Java that you find... Go here and download the latest version which corrects some of the vulnerabilities in the earlier versions...

http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0_10-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and let me know how your problem is doing...

You missed some fixes:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Please use HJT to fix them... You also still have an old version of Java installed...

Then run a couple of scans to see what they pick up...

* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
Then click the Start Scanning button below.
You should get a notification (bar on top) to install the activeX. Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols-faq.shtml).
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

Then AVG AntiSpyware (Ewido)...

Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close ewido. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Restart back into Normal Mode.

Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

So fix it with HJT too...

You are still running an old version of Java, but otherwise your logs look okay... If you are still having a problem, we will need to run some other scans...

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

and.....

Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...
DO NOT post the upper window which contains everything that was scanned...

http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

I downloaded the "Dr Web CureIt", when I tried to run it, a command prompt window flashed open and then nothing happened. I tried to re-download it to a new location and the same thing happened. Is there another link for this?

Here is the log from the MWaveScan: (Only the last entry begins with "File")

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\f3PSSavr.scr tagged as "not-a-virus:AdTool.Win32.MyWebSearch". No Action Taken.

I can post the rest of the log if you would like... It is rather long.

Please check the size of the DrWeb file and report it back here...

Please check the size of the DrWeb file and report it back here...

drweb-cureit is 3.40 MB

I am not sure why it isn't running... That is the correct size and it should be able to run...

I ran into a similar problem when I downloaded and tried to run it... Go here and download it instead...

I am having the same problem with DrWeb from the new download site.

If I right click on the program and select "run as" I get an error that says:

C:\"and the file directory"\Temp\ A temporary file needed for initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure the directory path exists, and disk space is available. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Then I can choose close or ignore buttons.

I checked the file path and it does exist and I have over 40gig of HD space left.

Not sure if any of this matters, but I thought I would share it with you.

Clean out your TEMP and TIF files, reboot and try again...

It appears that the DrWeb download is no good... I have the same problem... It seems to have the updates, but not the actual program...

Try a scan that will just provide info and doesn't fix anything so we can see if there is something lurking:

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Your log looks okay, so I suspect it may be a legit program that is getting in the way of shutting down....

Do this: open Task Manager and note what programs are running in Processes and also see if anything is in Applications... Do a Shutdown and see if it delays and indicates that something is shutting down... If so, post back here with a list of what was running just before you shut down... Focus on programs that don't have an obvious source that is familiar, but it would be good if you could list them all... You can use HJT to copy the list... When you open it, select to go to Misc Tools... and the Open Process Manager... Use the icon above the list on the right to copy the list to the Clipboard and paste it into a Notepad file to post here...

I agree, I think it is a service or process that is not shutting down properly.

When I shut down or reboot Windows, about 90% of the time I will see the "End Program Now", I do not have enough time to click the "End Now" button. Then my desktop will go away and the Windows XP shutdown screen will stay for 10 or so minutes.

Here is the list of running process when I shut down:

I tried stopping services manually, one by one to see if I could pin point the one causing the problem, but I got to the point where I did not know which service was associated with what process.

Thanks again for all of your help!!!!!

I don't see anything here that would cause that problem for sure... However, given some of the problems people have had with McAfee, I am guessing that it is probably the problem...

I suggest doing a thorough cleaning of your hard drive with cleaning out temp folders and doing a defragmentation... See if that helps at all... If not, you could try uninstalling McAfee and then reinstalling to see if it makes a difference... Make sure to disconnect from the internet while you do it, if you opt for that...

I have already done a thorough cleaning of my HD, including Temp folders and Cache, and then defragmented. It did not help.

I will uninstall and reinstall McAfee, I will try anything at this point.

Thank You for all of your help... I will get to the bottom of this and let you know how I made out... I would think you are just as curious as I am..

If you can think of anything else, please post it.

If McAfee is a problem, I am not opposed to using something else. I am not a big fan of Symantec, so I would have to do a little research to find something new.

I use a combination of Kerio for firewall and NOD32 for antivirus... Any of the suites tend to be resource hogs and don't always work as well as the individual programs... Of course, I also use FireFox with NoScripts and other precautions...

I can always give you more scans to run if you want to keep on digging... I don't see clues about what might be the issue, so I don't know which ones to recommend... The best one to gather info and fix a few things is not available right now... This one covers a number of very sneaky bits, so you could try it if you want....

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip) and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
