A company in the United States has released a very cheap laptop geared towards develloping countries, and aims on having every child in the world having a laptop. The laptops will consume a meagre 3W of power, and feature a b/w or colour screen, have speakers and a camera, and run a stripped down version of Linux.

Some plans include having models that can be powered by a crank or solar panel. The price per unit is close to $0.

i think they are going to run Fedora right?
That is a nice idea. Sadly, it will probably be faster than my laptop :(
Damn my outdated hardware!! :D

That's the only way we're going to save this world of ours, with computers/internet/knowledge in general...
stop worrying about terrorism and take a stand against ignorance and educate people. you'll see all your social problems disappear!

Yes, all we need to do is get laptops in the hands of the poor and then the world will be a better place.. Why hasn't someone thought of this sooner! I just hope they come with a reading tutorial with lots of pictures.
Johhny Quest your comments give us all a better understanding of our youth and what our future will be like! Everyone knows terrorists are illiterate and/or ignorant. If we could just get them to educate themselves they would stop hating us. Maybe we could get a small grass roots organization started, to collect money, to buy these laptops and send them too Iraq and the mountains in Pakistan. It may take a few years but with education they should come around ...
I just hope we can get them educated before they run out of explosives. If they keep going to heaven we are never going to get them educated!

Variable, maybe you believe that sarcasm directed at those showing well meaning idealism is the way to go??

I hate that type of thing!!
The amount of text mis-conception there is on the internet in unreal.
I guess it's true what they say, text message sarcasm is hard to see for many people. What I hate even more is that how news like this always turns discussion political.

I don't know what you mean Budfred. I think idealism is a good thing. Idealism, tempered by a firm grasp of reality, can do great things. Idealism on it's own .. leads to cynicism. The world is a complicated place. There are no simple answers.

And cynicism leads to attacking the idealistic with sarcasm... To put it in terms you may understand... We do not tolerate flaming in this forum... Please desist...

Budfred, I have been a member of this forum longer than you have and know the rules. If another moderator thinks I was out of line please have them send me an IM. I have noticed several occasions where you slam people for expressing their thoughts. Poking holes in flawed logic is not a flame. This was a philosophical argument and treated as such. If wit is a crime, than I guess I am guilty.
I find your thought police tactics oppressive and your latest post threatening when there is no cause for such a threat. You do seem to like to use your moderator status as a bully when you take a personal offense to a post. I come here to help people and discuss things on my free time. I share my more technical knowledge freely and the board is better for it. If you think I am out of line send me an IM.

Variable,
It appears you are trying to use your "wit" to be ironic... Calling me a "bully" after your sarcasm is certainly an ironic twist...
I appreciate your technical assistance to people on the forum and you have even been helpful to me at times...
I do not appreciate when you attack people with sarcasm rather than being clear that you simply disagree... If you do that publicly, I will confront it publicly, not by PM...
Personally, I don't disagree with your philosophical argument, just your decision to put down the idealistic tone of the comment and the person posting it...

Variable, you were out of line. Cynicism mixed with sarcasm has led to too much pain and sadness in my own life. I look upon the forums as a great anchor that has kept me steady these past few years. After dealing with real life and real people, I like to come here to relax and have fun. I do enjoy in-depth discussions around here, but negativity is something I'm trying to quit.
Please keep this in mind for the future. That's all I'm going to say.

Well that makes more sense, I understand what you mean. I was trying to point out an absurdity with absurdity. I will make it clear that I disagree next time and leave out undue sarcasm. Your original post sounded like you didn't want any disagreement with the posters thoughts, at least that's how I interpreted it.

For the record, I do agree with you, Variable. It's just that sarcasm doesn't work well in print. I had to re-read your post a couple times to understand you were being sarcastic. :p
Getting back to the issue, it is absurd to think that merely giving computers to everyone is going to fix any world social issues. You have to do more that just give them to people - you have to teach them what technology can do for them! Otherwise, we may find tribal leaders in the depths of the Congo jungles using these laptops as plates for their food.
It doesn't make any sense to me why they'd want to just give them away without any preamble. Then again, maybe the press coverage wasn't all that comprehensive. Maybe they've already thought of this?...
