View Full Version : I'm EXTREMELY Frustrated With This Problem Now - File Transferring!

I have two PC's:

One with Windows XP & one with Windows 98.

Now all I want to do is transfer 8gb worth of files from the PC which has Windows 98 installed on it to the PC which has Windows XP installed on it. Seems easy right? WRONG, I'm extremely frustrated now as I've been trying for 2 months to find a way to get the files from 1 PC to another. Here's what I've tried so far:

- I installed a wireless network card on to the Windows 98 PC so that it could connect with my Windows XP PC but whenever it attempts to connect to the other PC it just crashed completely and the mouse won't move etc so I have to restart the PC.

- I tried putting a CD into the Windows 98 CD Drive so that I could transfer the files using loads of CD's but the CD Drive is unable to burn CD's.

- I have a USB key which I am trying to put into the USB port on the Windows 98 PC but whenever I do, the PC doesn't recognise it. What I mean is the virtual drive doesn't appear in My Computer at all. I know that it's not a problem with the USB ports themselves as other USB hardware such as the wireless network card works in it.

I've really no idea what to do next as it seems as though I've tried everything. The only thing that I can think of is that the USB Key may need drivers installed for the PC to recognise it but I don't have the CD with the drivers on it. A few months back when I was using the PC with Windows 98 installed on it, the USB key worked fine though so I've no idea what's going on.

Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated!

Take the hard drive out of the Win98 box and slave it to the WinXP box (or alternatively put it in a USB enclosure attached to the WinXP box - or else use a cheap USB to IDE connector on the WinXP box). Copy the files across.

The only thing that I can think of is that the USB Key may need drivers installed for the PCWin98 needs to be Win98 SE and will need specific drivers to see any USB drives. After Win98 the drivers were native to the OS.

PS If there's not too much data upload it attached to emails to gmail or similar. There's even a utility that will convert your gmail account to a virtual drive. Then download to your WinXP. If you have BB you could even transfer files using IM such as Skype or Windows Messenger or Remote access software such as LogMeIn.

If you have fast internet connections on both PC's...

THIS (http://www.verzend.be/) site will host files where any individual file can be up to 1,000 MB in size and hold them for for 7 days waiting for them to be downloaded by anyone with the weblink.
Send the weblink only to your own email address so no-one else but you can download them.

I still use Laplink for windows 95 on my windows 98 SE computer and my laptop. Recently I tried to add a PC card NIC to the laptop. I could not get the driver to work. The laptop has windows 98 SE also. I had to buy a replacement serial COM port card for the 98 desktop. This was for the ISA bus. But I got it all working COM port to COM port using laplink.

Yet another method is to use a USB-USB Data Link (http://www.cwol.com/usb/usb-2-usb-data-link-file-transfer-cable-uc250.htm).
