Hi folks,
I'm a newish user, so please help out.

I've had McAfee Security Suite 2005 on my Dell XPS m170 laptop running XP pro for over a year now and it has been running with no problems. However, I've just upgraded to the 2007 version and despite an install with no problems I now find that when I shut down and restart I am greeted with...nothing.

I restart
I get the welcome screen which automatically logs me on
Then I get my desktop screen with no icons or start menu or status bar - just a blank desktop background.

The solution I have is to press CTRL-ALT-DEL and I get to the task manager. I can select my user name here and click log off, which then takes me to the welcome screen again where I then have to click on my username and then it works as it should. Obviously this isn't the way to go and all in all it takes several minutes to now see my desktop.

In terms of the system I'm pretty much a newbie so any help would be most appreciated.

Download a copy of Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and a copy of Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/).

Then uninstall Mcaffe and install the two programs above.

Return the Mcafee if you can and take a friend to dinner....

hi classic software,

thanks for this - if the problem persists i will indeed do this. if you have a moment though, it would be good to find out why the two packages you mention are better. this is more for the sake of curiosity than anything else.

thanks,

Sunster

Lower memory overhead. They do not cause the problems you experience. Kerio is a way better firewall than Macafee....

Many thanks classicsoftware.

I will indeed take your advice. My copy is McAfee is an OEM so it wasn't expensive (not enough for a hearty meal that's fer sure). Thanks for all your help.

Lower memory overhead. They do not cause the problems you experience. Kerio is a way better firewall than Macafee....Not to mention, the overhead your wallet will experience when you need to renew your McAfee subscription...
