My friend bought components to build a PC. It's a dual core pentium, ABIT motherboard, 250 GB hdd, PCI Express video card. Got all components assembled, hooked up monitor, fired it up.

Got nothing. Monitor apparently getting no signal (led stays amber), get a single beep (about 5 seconds, pause, single 5 second beep again, pause, etc).

Mobo has Phoenix D686 bios from what we can see, logged onto Phoenix site to figure out the beep code, is not listed. At least I don't see a 1-1-1 or whatever code.

Anybody have any idea what is wrong? Similar beep codes indicate either a video problem or a memory problem, but I'm getting no video. Does that narrow down the issue?

Pull the CMOS battery (usually I replace them, even on new builds), check the BIOS clear jumper, make sure it is in the run position. Reseat the video card and try again...

See IBM BIOS Beep Codes (http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm#06), Repeating Short Beep = No Power, Loose Card, or Short.

Make sure there are no mobo shorts to the casing, and that all connections are good.
