Whenever I try importing a movie into Windows Movie Maker so I can edit it I get the following message:

The file F:\Movies\Baby Boy\Baby.Boy-2001.DivX.-.Part.02.of.02_new.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

What could be the problem?

Other than missing a codec or two?

Well the file name is a real mess...try to keep the names as simple as possible, because some programs choke on complex names with non-alpha/numeric characters.

But take the error message at face value...you are probably missing a codec, and from the filename, I'd guess probably a DivX codec (probably the clip was encoded using a newer version than what is installed on your machine).

Supported file types in Windows Movie Maker (XP pro)

Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

I don't see div-x listed.

F:\Movies\Baby Boy\Baby.Boy-2001.DivX.-.Part.02.of.02_new.avi

The extension seems to be .avi, it just could be the strange naming, almost like having eight different extensions...

Try making a copy of the same file and rename it to something simpler with the .avi extension, like BabyBoyPrt2.avi
