View Full Version : **Reverse Order**

Hi all

I REALLY think that when replying to a post the order should be reversed from 1st post 1st.. to last post 1st !!

Now as many of you know- some people create 'BOOKS' (we shall remain nameless) hehe

this makes ita pain on a long thread to follow what you're replying to (for an old burnout like me) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

just a thought.. I seem to remember this coming up last year sometime.

So we have to scroll alllll the way down to find out what it's all about? hmmm....answers first, question last...sorry, I don't think it would work well at all.

If it's one of someone's books http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ...you can always use the [Page Up], [Page Down], [Home] and [End] keys on the keyboard to scroll quickly. [End] takes you to the bottom of the page from anywhere, I use it constantly, then [Page Up] if I need to see the next post or two up...[Home] goes to the top of the page, [Page Up] and [Page Down] do exactly what they say, scroll one page at a time.

For some reason they don't work on Microsoft sites until you click inside the page - to activate the page as the top window I suppose - not sure. Some others are the same, and on pages such as the PC Guide with a navigation menu at left, you have to click inside the portion of the page you want to scroll by keyboard. I've used it for ages, I actually navigate by keyboard more than mouse quite often.

Some things aren't too feasible, like finding links on a long list, [Tab] goes from one to the next, but it might take ages to get to the one you want in a long list. works exactly the same as the browser's [b]Back button, but I haven't found anything that will work for Forward yet...oh, and of course, [Enter] activates links, once you have the one you want highlighted, and sends forms, passwords, etc..

are you sure you get what I mean ??

on most boards, for instance, when I just replied to this.. it was right there almost cause there is only one reply on this so far.....

when we have posts that are over 10 replies (and some of them VERY long), lots of times by the time your going to respond to it what- you're responding to may not even be what the ORIGINAL 'Topic' was even about!!

we already know the question. so to speak - when we first click on the topic.. what I suggest would be that when replying the last answer be 1st instead of the other way around, as it is now. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

why would this not be a good idea ?? am I missing something ?? you of all people (mod) I would think you would like to do without all that scolling and button pushing over and over and over again.. hehehe

Randy,
You must stop learning about the non-important issues of things like, oh, I don't know...How to take apart and put back a comp with your eyes closed and other things you know how to do. That's really not important. The important stuff to know, is the keyboard keys and meeces etc. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Sea69,
In my very humble opinion,I think it would be better the way it is, because, when you're going to respond to the answer, you can see what everyone else suggested first to see if you can add to that. Instead of not seeing what everyone else suggested in a long thread and possibly posting the same answer. JMO.

I must not be expressing myself correctly.. or whooshh -right over everyones heads... have any of you ever replied many times on a board that has it opposite ??

when you're responding to a post.. many times you are replying to the last post as well as the original, its a progessive train of thought. Why would you want it to be back at the beggining ??

**additionally I would suggest at the top having a click-thtu link "go to first unread post", many boards have this as well, and I think Version 5.46 has these options http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

You are expressing yourself well, but I like the sequence just the way it is. I don't see that it would reduce scrolling for me, and it is counter-intuitive since everything else I read is from top to bottom. Remember, you are unique http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

good point sleddog...it's been posted in this forum before too, I think...

Randy: I started trying to find keyboard shortcuts long ago when my monitor died. Called a good friend and he walked me through how to shut down properly by keyboard alone, and it worked great. I already knew that the backspace key worked the same as the back button, but that's it. Started tinkering and next thing you know I could get around on the net without a mouse, except for the forward button. It's really nice when my arm gets tired from sitting in one position holding the mouse after searching through 160 links for info for over an hour... [Tab] [Enter] and you're looking at the next link...

Same for the Start Menu. I can open any program on my computer without touching a mouse. [Ctrl]+[Esc] opens the Start Menu, arrow keys to highlight the one you want, arrow right to open a category, [Enter] to open any program. Need to shut down with a dead monitor, that and watch the hard drive LED and you can shut down properly, as long as you know whether you shut down or restarted last time...When the hard drive LED stops, it's safe.

[]sea: Yes, I understand what you posted quite well, I've seen it on this and other forums too. I've never seen one that opened with the last post at the top. Scrolling is the same either way, you have to scroll down to find the last post, or you have to scroll down to find the first one. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

If you have 15 posts, you still have to scroll one way or the other to read them all, unless you have a monitor 6 feet tall...I don't see the point...either way, you still have the same amount of scrolling to do, no matter what, and I always want to see the first post and all in between so I know exactly what's going on. How else would I know when a topic has gone way off in left field, and finally ask these guys to get back on track. (That's only happened twice that I can remember, and it was basically understandable both times, nothing derogatory intended.)

And as sled pointed out, this has been an ongoing debate in newsgroups for ages, newsgroups are laid out the same way-original post at top, newest post at the bottom. It's laid out that way intentionally, so when you open a topic you see the original post first, and you know exactly what's going on. Otherwise you have no idea until you get to the bottom. Same as reading a book, the first line is at the top, not at the bottom. First page is in front, not in back...I open Yahoo mail and the newest messages are on top, not on the last page of about 120 messages where I have to click through 3 or 4 pages to get at them.

That's about the only way I see it making any sense. If you put the newest post at the top you have no idea what the question was until you scroll down, then you have to scroll back up to find out what the answers were...how much sense would that make? Twice the scrolling...

I hope this makes some sense, I'm working on day 3 of a headache that seems to want to stick around, and really can't quite think straight...and I NEVER get headaches...once or twice a year at most. By the way, that's the reason I haven't posted many answers the past 2 days, or been on IRC much...bear with me folks, this stupid thing has to go away before much longer, it's better this morning than yesterday...

Now that I've re-read this about 4 times I think I can look for that little grey button...

oh lord..... I am not talking about when you first click on a topic.. of course when you are READING- the topic, it has to be from the 1st to the last or it makes no sense.

I mean when REPLYING

and how about the link @ top of page, "Go to first unread Post" ??

often when replying to posts, we do so in a step by step manner.. on really long threads this makes no difference because.. they all aren't shown anyway..

** btw- hate headaches, rarely get them either since no more etoh.. hehe
